Environmental Camps

Mattole Road paving will occur August through mid-September. Expect up to 30-minute delays on Mattole Road between Hwy 101 and Grasshopper Rd intersection due to road re-paving.

There will be two (2) full day road closures (8am-5pm) per week on Mattole Rd from Hwy 101 to Grasshopper Intersection.  Road closure days will be consistent per week and will be announced in the public notice prior to construction beginning. Day use areas and trailheads should be open for the most part, but Blue Slide and Big Trees will likely have temporary closures based on location of paving equipment throughout the project timeframe.

For more information on the road work and closure, please contact Roads and Trails Manager Brian Merrill at (707) 445-6547.

Environmental Camps offer visitors a tranquil alternative to developed campgrounds. Humboldt Redwoods State Park has two Environmental Camps located on Mattole Road, approximately 6 miles west of the Avenue of the Giants. Open mid-May through late September, these sites have picnic tables, fire rings, bear lockers, chemical toilets, and untreated water. Campers must register at any open campground entrance station prior to setting up camp. Upon registration, campers will receive the gate combination to the parking area. Campers must walk between 50 and 200 yards from the parking area to their camp site.

Baxter Environmental Camp has two sites located under second growth redwoods along the south side of Bull Creek.

Hamilton Barn Environmental Camp is located on an old homestead site and has three sites. Two sites are located under second growth redwoods and one is in the meadow, along the north side of Bull Creek.

Both Environmental Camps are located in black bear country. All food and scented items must be stored in a bear locker.

Site-specific reservations are available from just before Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. Baxter and Hamilton Barn are quite popular and reservations are recommended.

Fees are $20.00 per night.
